This area is as close to the geographical center of Europe as you can get.
There are many worthwhile sights, maybe not as spectacular as some of those in the Alps, but more relaxed and away from the overrun Bavarian tourist traps.
Please click on the names of the places at the map of Bavarian Sights to explore the area.
Starting in the north you can do something for your well-being at the health spa in Bad Steben.
Stop by in Hof to enjoy a pair of hot dogs on a bun from the “Werschtlama”. The porcelain factory outlets in Selb, Schoenwald and Arzberg offer the opportunity to find and purchase a special gift to bring along, as a matter of fact the China Museum in Selb-Ploessberg gives you some knowledge and insight about this region’s main industry.
The rock labyrinth in Wunsiedel will show you the type of rock garden Mother Nature builds.
To the west is the amazing city of Bamberg, which in medieval times was divided into the religious and the civil areas with it’s city hall build on an island between the both of them. The amazing cathedral there and also the ornate pilgrimage church of Vierzehnheiligen, about 20 miles away are well worth a visit and invite you to do something for your spiritual well-being.
Right in the center of this region is Kulmbach and the Plassenburg castle with a tin soldier/figurine collection really worth seeing, this town was also dedicated to the liquid gold sometimes called Bier or even beer.
The beer is taken very seriously here as the area has the highest density of breweries per capita in the world, Aufsess even made the Guinness Book of World Records and Forchheim is home to the one of a kind “Kellerwald”.
This area is home to the Franconian Beer street.
Cobur, home of one of the largest and best preserved castles in Germany. It’s art galleries are a must visit for the art lovers among you.
Bayreuth, famous for the composer Richard Wagner and the Opera house dedicated to him is also worth a visit. While in town make sure to visit the other Opera house too and especially an exploration of the brewery museum at the Maisel Brewery should be planned in.
These are some of the many remarkable sights in the area, but it only constitutes a small sampling of them all.
