Coburg:
Local spelling:
Coburg
Coburg has a long history dating back almost a thousand years, with many notable residents including the reformer Martin Luther.
The culmination of power came with Franz Friedrich Anton von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld in the 18th century, when he married off his kids to various royal houses all over Europe, including ties to the English Throne. Click on his name if you are intrigued.
The castle or Veste Coburg is one of the largest castles in Germany and as it was never conquered also one of the best preserved. It is now a large and well known art museum.
The city center has it’s own charm with the Market Place framed by the City Hall and the Stadthaus and also Schloss Ehrenburg only a short walk away.
Famous in the area is the Coburger Bratwurst, which has a strict ingredients list including what casing to use, even the size is a local “law” and they are roasted on a full fire made with pine cones. Definitely worth a try during your visit.
Besides a Christmas market in Advent, open air concerts in the summertime and the many usual local events listed on their web site, the most notable is the Samba Festival.
