Forchheim

Local spelling:

Forchheim

A town with a documented history that goes back over 1200 years. It was completely fortified in the Middle Ages and never conquered during the 30 years war. Even with most of the fortification gone it is still a charming old city. Notable is the nearby unique Kellerwald, a collection of let’s call them root cellars in the middle of the woods which were, according to a local legend, actually tunnels leading back into the city and they supposedly played a huge roll in the city’s history to supply it with food during sieges.

In more recent times these tunnels, keeping the ideal temperature throughout the year, were used by the local breweries to store their beer. Over 200 years ago these breweries placed beer gardens on top of these cellars, which gives you the locally famous Kellerwald (Woods with cellars) with 24 beer gardens/restaurants, it is the perfect place to enjoy a couple of beers.

Annafest

St. Ann’s festival

Origin said to go back to 1516. Following a pilgrimage to the St. Anna chapel in nearby Unterweilersbach, the participants stopped and met their families for what we would call nowadays a picnic. This together with the breweries keeping their beer in the cellars there developed into an important local event. The yearly festival called Annafest started in 1840. It attracts 500,000 visitors from all over and is a location mentioned in the more elaborate beer based websites.
