Bamberg:

Local spelling:

Bamberg

An UNESCO world heritage site since 1993

Bamberg is situated on the banks of the river Regnitz and more important on the Rhine-Main-Danube canal, the waterway, which connects the Atlantic with the Black Sea

This city located in northern Bavaria in the Franconian province is also known as the “Franconian Rome”, as it is build, like Rome, on seven hills.

First mentioned in 902 AD it is proud of its more than 1000 years of history.

In the 11th century, during the reign of Henry the II (Heinrich der II) and his wife Kunigunde (both entombed in the Dom or cathedral in Bamberg) and his appointment by the Pope to Emperor and protector of the catholic church, the city became the center of the “Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation” (referred to as the second Reich, with the Roman Empire being number one).

1047: Pope Clemens the II dies, he is the only pope whose grave is north of the Alps.

In 1093 beer was first mentioned in the chronicles and the city housed, at the beginning of the last century, 65 breweries with an annual beer consumption of 440 liters (over 116 US gallon) per person annually. To this day with its remaining 9 local breweries and beer consumption here down to about 140 liters (about 37 US gallon) per person the city of about 69000 is still a vital link to the Franconian beer tradition and the fact that Oberfranken (Upper Franconia), with still more than 200 breweries, is actually the beer center of the world, with the highest density of breweries per area and more breweries than any country in Europe and in the world it is only topped by the total number of breweries in the whole USA, in China or in Russia. The region of Oberfranken with less than 2800 square miles is only half the size of Connecticut or just a little larger than Delaware.
