Nuremberg:

Local spelling:

Nürnberg

Located in Middle Franken and is the largest city in Franken (Franconia)

First mentioned in 1050 and appointed in the Middle Ages as the town where each newly elected German king had to hold his first diet and where the crown jewels were kept. It was the first major city to embrace the reformation in 1525. During the Middle Ages, Nuremberg and Augsburg were the most important centers on the north-south trading routes. A more sinister reputation was bestowed upon the city during the Nazi time. As Nuremberg was closely tied to the Holy Roman Empire, considered by Hitler as the 2. Reich (Empire), it became a center for the Nazis.

Severely bombed out during World War II, it was rebuilt after the war in a relatively short period of time, with the fortified Old Town keeping it’s medieval charm.
