Mittenwald:
Local spelling:
Mittenwald
Mittenwald is another one of these charming, beautiful Alpine villages, which instantly come to mind when you picture Bavaria. Famous for the local luthiers manufacturing world famous violins and cellos since 1689.
As for the sights in this hamlet, you don’t have to go far, just look around and fall in love with it.
It is situated along one of the ancient Roman trade routes, the Via Raetia, and might have been the location of one of the official way stations during that time.
Worth a visit is the Violin museum and while you stop for a “Brotzeit” and a “Bier” stroll through the “Wolpertinger-Museum” in the former ice cellar of the Mittenwald brewery.
The local main concern is to uphold it’s traditions starting with the century old Canival to get rid of winter to the biweekly “Heimatabend” an evening with traditional dance and songs in Lederhosen and Dirndls. To a free guided walking tour every Tuesday and the Bozner Market which only occurs every five years.
Nestled right into the Alps there are Cable cars and chairlifts all around you, take one of these and go for a hike in the refreshing clean Alpine air. The area is a mecca for summer and winter sports.
