In the shadow of the highest mountain in the Bavarian Alps, the Zugspitze, sit two hamlets combined into one city, Garmisch and Partenkirchen, still famous for hosting the Olympic Games in 1936, both parts of this town preserve their charming roots. In the center of the Mittenwald, Oberammergau, Ettal triangle and in close proximity to King Ludwig’s castles, with excellent opportunities for winter and summer sports it is also usually one of the busiest towns in the area.
Besides enjoying the same charm you find in most of the alpine towns, the most memorable thing to do here on a clear day would be a roundtrip to the top of the Zugspitze. From Garmisch take the rack railway to the top and come down in an ear popping experience with the cable car to the beautiful alpine lake, the Eibsee, and again back with the train to Garmisch.

Partnachklamm, the Gorge of the Partnach River, is another sight you should not miss when visiting the area. Three scrollable area maps can be explored at this link and an English language brochure can be downloaded here. Besides a 25 minute walk to the entrance of the gorge, it is also the possible to go in style on a horse drawn wagon.
In winter taking a horse drawn sleigh, bundled in heavy blankets and furs, to the entrance and hiking into the gorge with tremendous icicles all around you was like right out of a fairy tale.

When I was a bit younger a weekend visit to the ski mecca in Garmisch in winter did not mean, that you had to bring along your skis, only up to date ski clothing. So together with a couple of friends we went there strictly for the Aprés Ski or the local evening bar scene, spending the days enjoying the sights.
