Freising
Local spelling:
Freising
A city well grounded in the Catholic faith, it is still home to the administration of the “Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Munich and Freising”.
One of the oldest settlements in Bavaria, it was already in existence in 724 AD.
The saddled bear in the city’s cote of arms is said to go back to Saint Corbinian, who ordered a bear to carry his luggage across the Alps after the bear killed his packhorse.
The city spreads over two hills, with hill #1 housing the cathedral and #2 is home to the
worldwide famous Weihenstephan, the world’s oldest brewery. There are numerous festivals and markets throughout the year with the “Uferlos Festival” (without boundaries festival) in the middle of May, the Johannismarkt, an artist market at the Schafhof, towards the end of June culminates in the Johannisfeuer bonfire.
In the middle of July is the Altstadtfest, old town festival, which is celebrated on and around the Marienplatz and also the Volksfest described below.
The Weihenstephan brewery participates in these events and has it’s own schedule of events highlighted in their newsletter. You can sign up at their web site.
