Kulmbach

Local spelling:

Kulmbach

Kulmbach, another city famous for beer (the Eisbock originated here), is another of the old towns which are so charming that you should not miss them.

The most notable, in our opinion, is the world’s largest pewter figurine museum in the city’s landmark the Plassenburg, the massive castle towering above the town. Allow enough time to enjoy the elaborate displays of tin soldier battle scenes and even tin figurine displays of stops around the world like American western scenes (over 300,000 figurines in 220 dioramas) . To walk up to the castle you should be in decent shape or take the bus from the city center. After coming down from the castle enjoy an ice cream or a beer in the pedestrian zone around the market place.

The outdoor farmer’s market twice a week at the marketplace

and many other occasional and periodical events throughout the year.

Personal story of chance:

While scouting out places for one of our tours we decided to visit Kulmbach on a Sunday morning with friends of mine. During the walk up to the castle we passed a German group on a guided tour and my friend joked that if we would go closer we could listen to the guide and get free information. At that time the female guide stopped talking and excused herself from the group by saying that she has to say hello to her second cousin from America whom she had not seen in many years. She came over and gave me a big hug. Naturally after she was done with her guide duties we met downtown for a drink and received in depth information about the city.

No, it was not arranged and yes, this world is small and amazing things happen!
